🎙️ Deep Dive Drive – Episode 6: Not Finishing First

• Kris Hatton • Season 1 • Episode 14

In this episode of Deep Dive Drive, recorded during my morning commute, I tackle a subject that divides opinion — rewarding children for not finishing first.

Over the last decade, we’ve seen a huge rise in medals and trophies being handed out for finishing fifth, sixth, seventh… even last place. While the intention may be positive, I share why I believe this approach can have a negative long-term impact on a child’s development.

In this episode, I talk about:

  • Why constantly rewarding failure blurs the meaning of success
  • How losing is a crucial part of building resilience and mental toughness
  • The danger of removing hunger and motivation at a young age
  • Why discomfort, setbacks, and disappointment are necessary teachers
  • How protecting feelings short-term can harm confidence long-term

I’ll be honest — I get a little irate in this one.

Not out of anger, but out of concern.

This isn’t about being harsh on children.

It’s about preparing them for reality.

Failure, loss, and not finishing first are all part of life — and learning how to respond to those moments is what truly shapes strong, resilient people.

If you’re a parent, coach, or educator, this episode will challenge the idea that everyone always needs a prize — and open up an important conversation about growth, grit, and real confidence.

Raw opinions. Real lessons. One drive at a time.
