🎙️ Deep Dive Drive – Episode 44: Are You Coaching Effort or Just the Outcome?
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode of Deep Dive Drive, recorded on my morning commute, I explore a question that sits at the heart of player development:
Are you coaching the effort… or are you only reacting to the outcome?
In football, it’s easy to focus on what we can see at the end — the goal scored, the pass completed, the result on the scoreboard. But behind every outcome is a series of behaviours, decisions, and levels of effort that truly drive improvement.
In this episode, I talk about:
- Why effort and intent should be recognised just as much as results
- How focusing only on outcomes can damage confidence and learning
- The importance of reinforcing behaviours like work rate, movement, and commitment
- Why effort builds habits that eventually produce better outcomes
- How coaches can shift their language to reward the right things
Because players don’t always control the result — but they do control their effort.
When you coach the behaviours, the habits, and the intent, the outcomes start to take care of themselves.
If you’re a coach, teacher, or leader, this episode will challenge you to think about what you’re reinforcing every day — the final result, or the process that creates it.
Coach the effort.
The outcomes will follow.
One drive at a time.
